MLD & Cosmetic/Plastic Surgery - The Benefits

There are so many benefits to having Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) following surgery:

Reduces Swelling and Oedema (fluid build-up)
Surgery often causes fluid build-up (post-operative oedema). MLD gently stimulates the lymphatic system to move excess fluid away from the surgical site and reduce swelling. This can improve mobility and range of motion much more quickly than without having MLD.
Speeds Up Healing
MLD promotes better lymphatic circulation, helping deliver nutrients, reducing inflammation and removing waste more efficiently. It can lead to quicker tissue regeneration and recovery.
Minimises Scar Formation and Fibrosis
MLD helps to soften and mobilise tissues, reducing the risk of fibrotic tissue or tight scars. It is especially beneficial after cosmetic surgeries like liposuction or tummy tucks.
Decreases Pain and Discomfort
The gentle and rhythmic movements of MLD calm the nervous system. It also reduces pressure from fluid buildup thus easing pain naturally.
Prevents Complications
There is the potential with any surgery of post-operative complications. These can include seromas. MLD supports fluid drainage and may reduce the risk of seroma (fluid pocket) formation. It is also the preferred treatment of seromas rather than aspiration (draining with a syringe) as it is doesn't increase the risk of infection as aspiration can.
Supports Immune Function
The lymphatic system is vital to immunity. MLD helps stimulate lymph flow and enhance the body’s natural healing response.

Surgeons in the UK are now catching up with those overseas in their recommendation of MLD post-surgery. Frequency of treatment is dependant on the type of surgery performed but, on average, is twice weekly for 4-6 weeks before moving to weekly. If healing is faster, we will never take your money unnecessarily and appointments can be pushed out more quickly.

Surgeons often refer their patients to us as we are members of MLDuk. This is a register of highly trained therapists who hold specific qualifications and additional insurance to cover working with post-surgical clients.

There are many therapists offering MLD or "lymphatic drainage massage" having taken a day/weekend or even an online course. This is NOT appropriate for post-surgery or for clients with Lymphoedema/Lipoedema or other chronic conditions. It takes much longer to learn the anatomy and all the treatment options for the various procedures and conditions and harm could be caused if not properly trained. Insurers would also not insure for advanced treatments based on these introductory courses. We pay a huge premium for additional insurance.

We are COVID-safe, have a range of policies and procedures in place for infection control etc and are trained in cellulitis (infection) management. We are also licenced with Worcestershire Council (as all therapists in Worcester must be) and accredited members of FHT.

We are frequently booked out at least 8 weeks in advance so we cannot accommodate last minute bookings. As a result, we would recommend booking your appointments at the time you book your surgery. You are also welcome to contact us to discuss your requirements and surgery and we are happy to book your appointments whilst we're chatting!

I look forward to welcoming you!
