Scar Massage Therapy - Promoting Healing, Flexibility & Confidence
Scars are a natural part of the body’s healing process, but they can sometimes become tight, raised, painful, or emotionally distressing. Scar massage is a gentle, hands-on technique that helps improve the appearance, flexibility, and function of scar tissue and the surrounding fascia.

What Is Scar Massage?
Scar massage is a therapeutic technique that involves applying tailored, gentle pressure and movement to the skin and underlying tissues/fascia where a scar has formed.  A range of strokes are used including circular, linear and cross-friction movements that encourages healthy remodelling of the scar.

Whether from surgery, injury or burns, massage can support your scar healing by:

  • Softening tight or raised scar tissue

  • Improving blood flow and lymphatic drainage

  • Reducing pain, itching, or sensitivity

  • Restoring normal movement in the surrounding tissue

  • Improving the cosmetic appearance of the scar

When Can You Start Scar Massage?
Scar massage is typically recommended once the wound is fully closed and healed — usually around 6–8 weeks post-injury or surgery, depending on individual healing.

However, treatments such as LLLT, 6-D taping (around the region of but not over the scar) and silicone tape can be used earlier than this.  It is usual for scar massage to be included as part of another treatment - this could be remedial massage or MLD, depending on the scar and it's impact on the physical body.  All of this is carefully assessed at your appointment.  Even old scars can benefit from scar massage and this is something I have seen many times in clinic. â€‹
